Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District’s schools enrolled 96 students in the 2022-23 school year, 16.5% less than the previous year, according to the California Department of Education.
Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 50% of them were boys, and 50% were girls.
Data also showed that most of the students were white, making up 62.5% of the Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District’s total enrollment.

Among the two schools in Surprise Valley Joint Unified School District, Surprise Valley Elementary School recorded the highest enrollment of 52 students in the 2022-23 school year.
In the last decade, enrollment in California elementary and secondary schools rose by at least 5%, while high school enrollment dropped 5%.
However, overall enrollment in California public schools is sliding, and the Public Policy Institute of California expects it to drop another 8% by the 2031-32 school year.
